Mimio’s Dr. T.V. (Joe) Layng Named Fellow of Renowned International Behavior Analysis Society
CAMBRIDGE, MA — Aug. 12, 2013 — T. V. (Joe) Layng, Ph.D., Mimio’s Director of Learning Sciences, has been named a fellow of the Association of Behavior Analysis International (ABAI). One of four fellows named for 2013, Layng was chosen for his outstanding service, research, and design of educational technology based on behavior analysis.
With more than 6,000 members worldwide and a total membership of 14,000 in its affiliated chapters, the ABAI is a nonprofit organization of professionals dedicated to advancing the field of behavior analysis through research, education, and practice.
“This is a wonderful honor, and I feel privileged to have my work recognized in this way,” said Layng. “It’s gratifying to have the ABAI fellows consider me worthy of joining their ranks.”
In the early to mid-90s, Layng held a number of positions in schools, universities, and other public institutions related to instructional design, educational technology, large-scale performance improvement, and clinical behavior analysis. In 1999, he cofounded Headsprout and served as the organization’s senior scientist until it merged with Mimio in 2011.
At Mimio, Layng plays a key role in the design, testing, and implementation of the MimioSprout™ early reading program and the MimioReading™ comprehension suite, both of which are based on behavior analytic instructional technology. He also is one of the principal authors of the newly released MimioScience™ interactive lessons, an NGSS-aligned interactive whiteboard science curriculum for grades 3-8.
“Layng’s contributions to Mimio, as well as his own projects – such as Music Learning Lab, a music teaching application that he helped create for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, all demonstrate the positive effects of instructional systems based on behavioral principles,” said Manny Perez, general manager of Mimio. “Because of Layng’s work, Mimio has received awards from prestigious organizations, such as the Software & Information Industry Association, and public-service awards from the city of Chicago. It’s only appropriate that he also receive this recognition.
Layng has published more than 30 articles describing, documenting, and analyzing his instructional programs, and he has given more than 50 invited presentations of his work both in the United States and abroad. He has four patents that reflect his work related to educational applications of behavior analysis. Layng serves on the boards of several organizations, including the Chicago School of Professional Psychology.
